Avoid Late Fees If You Want to Pay Off Credit Card Debt

If you are serious about wanting to payoff credit card debt, you should never be late on a payment. And you should never miss a payment to the credit card company. Not only can both of these hurt your credit score, but the fees can accrue and the interest rates can grow and before you know it, you might even have trouble coming up with enough money to make the minimum monthly payment.

No Justification for a Late Payment
Granted that sometimes, it can be hard to make your payments on time, even though you stay on top of things. But if something comes up and you are not able to pay, you’ll be penalized. Even though in your mind you may think what has come up will justify a late payment, the credit card company will not see it that way. The best advice is follow the instructions in your bill regarding payment; pay where and when you are supposed to pay – and do it on time.

In Better Interest of the Creditors
Credit card companies make a good deal of money from those who pay late.

The penalties and the possibility of your over all debt growing is a good thing in their eyes. They know that a certain number of card users will get into trouble and that means a lot of profit to them. It is in their better interest for you to be late and even miss a payment.

Minimum Monthly Payment
The easiest way to continue making payments each month is to always have the minimum payment amount set aside, so that you have it ready when your credit card bill arrives. Once you know that you won’t be facing penalties or charged with any late fees, you should look into paying a higher amount than just the minimum.

Skip a Payment
Another option is skip a payment, although you’ll need to check whether or not your credit card company offers it.

This option will allow you to request a waiver regarding your payment, when something comes up and you don’t have the money to pay your bill. Call customer service and find out the fees and if you can do this or not – don’t just assume you can. Make sure that you use this service wisely if you have it, and only when it is an emergency.

If you want to eliminate credit card debt, a good rule of thumb to follow is to always make sure that you have the money to pay at least the minimum amount each month, the minute the statement arrives. This way, you’ll remain in good standing with your creditors and your credit score will remain unblemished. If you can’t make a payment contact customer services immediately and find out your options.
